  • Amoreiras (2010)

Amoreiras (2010), an installation about autonomy, artificial learning, nature and the environment. The main actors are five young mulberry trees at Paulista Avenue, São Paulo’s cultural and economic hub. Each one of the trees has an implanted poetical prosthesis, a device with the purpouse of supplying, correcting, and enhancing a natural but compromised function, thus guaranteeing the tree’s survival. This prosthesis consists of a band of metal, rubber and acrylic prosthesis connected to a small motor and to an Arduino board to make the young trunk vibrate in dialog with the factors related to the pollution.

A dance of trees, prosthesis and algorithms, making apparent and poetic the swaying of the branches, sometimes (in)voluntary-mechanical , sometimes caused by the wind itself running against the leaves.

Amoreiras is a project on autonomy, artificial learning, nature and the environment. The main actors are five young trees at Paulista Avenue, cultural and economic center of São Paulo. Five small recently planted red mulberry trees, with cylindrical composite drupes, infructescences of succulent texture, acidulated and pleasant taste, that mature in the spring. The tree has heart-shaped, toothed leaves that serve as food to the silkworm, with flowers in catkins and dark red to almost black fruits that are edible au natura and much used in jams; mulberry, black mulberry, mora. They are trees whose planting is forbidden on avenues of the city because they pollute the roads with leaves that fall into the culverts and fruits that attract small birds and indelible stain the sidewalks and clothes of passersby.

Amoreiras was presented at the Emoção Art.ficial 5.0, V Bienal de Arte e Tecnologia exhibit, in Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, from June 30 to September 5, including a catalog and a DVD.
